Advancing Lead Pipe Replacement in Our Community

In 2025, our community came together to change a Wisconsin law that prohibited the use of federal funding for lead pipe replacements in Superior – funding that was available to every other water system in our state. The Superior Community Coalition worked together with local and state leaders to ensure our community could access these critical upgrades. Thank you to everyone who supported this effort.

Now, the City of Superior and our local water utility are working together to replace every lead pipe in the city, at no cost to residents. Replacement began this summer and will continue as more lead pipes are inventoried across the city.

What is the lead pipe replacement issue?

Some service lines in Superior are made of galvanized pipe or contain lead — just like many older water systems across the country. Thanks to rigorous testing and treatment by the local water utility, water leaves the treatment plant completely lead-free. However, once the water leaves the treatment plant, it can still pick up lead from aging service lines, household plumbing or fixtures as it flows.

A service line connects the water main to your house or building part of it is owned by the utility and part by the homeowner.

The EPA says all lead lines must be removed by 2037.

Thank you to the community members who signed on to support this critical change. By making our voices heard to local and state leadership, our community now has the funds and support we need to ensure all families can replace their lead lines affordably.
